The Education Department is excited to announce the recruitment of 20,500 Education Assistants and General School Assistants for public and special schools in the province. This initiative is part of the fourth phase of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) in the Basic Education sector. Key Details of the Education Assistant Recruitment Program

  1. Phase and Eligibility: This fourth phase of the PYEI is specifically seeking new applicants who have not participated in any of the previous phases. The focus is on bringing fresh talent and perspectives into the education system.
  2. Role and Impact: Education Assistants play a crucial role in supporting teachers with administrative tasks, classroom management, and extracurricular activities such as sports coaching and cultural events. General Assistants contribute by assisting with maintenance, cleaning, tending to vegetable gardens, and general administrative duties. The positive impact of these roles has been evident in the success of previous program phases.

  4. Application Period: Applications are open from 26 September to 16 October 2022.
  5. Eligibility Criteria:
    • Unemployed youth between the ages of 18 – 34 (turning 35 before or on 31 March 2024) are eligible to apply for positions in public schools.
    • For special schools, the age limit is extended to 18 – 39 years, turning 40 before or on 31 March 2024.
    • Education Assistants require a minimum of an NQF 4 (Matric) qualification.
    • School Assistants can apply with or without an NQF 4 qualification.
  6. Contract and Stipend: Successful candidates will be employed from 1 February to 30 September 2023, receiving a monthly stipend of R4,081.44, less a 1% UIF contribution.
  7. Application Process:
    • Applications must be submitted online via the zero-rated mobisite SA Youth. This site can be accessed through a mobile phone without incurring data charges.
    • Note that applications will not be accepted at schools or through the WCED.
