Firstly, lets understand what “accredited” actually means. Accreditation in the training industry actually refers to the certification usually for a particular period of time, of a person, a body or an institution as having the capacity to fulfill a particular function in the quality assurance system set up by the South African Qualifications Authority.

Assessor Accreditation is awarded to providers who offer outcomes-based learning programmes aligned to the NQF registered unit standards and qualifications. It is given to a provider, usually for a period of three years.

What does an Accredited Assessor do in South Africa?

Training Assessment role according to (Skills Portal) involves:

  • Plan for the assessment.
  • Prepare the candidate for the assessment.
  • Conduct the assessment according to established assessment principles and decide whether the candidate is competent or not yet competent.
  • Collect evidence of the candidate?s performance.
  • Evaluate and judge the evidence.
  • Record the assessment decision.
  • Provide feedback to the candidate.
  • Complete all documentation and forward to the ETQA.
  • Regularly review the assessment process and implement changes as and when required.
  • Comply with all moderation and ETQA requirements.’

A typical Assessor will also find himself/herself doing most of the following tasks in a corporate environment:

  • Managing all training and Assessment Deliverables
  • Monitoring classroom attendance in conjunction with the training department.
  • Meeting regularly with the training and admin departments regarding absenteeism and terminations.
  • Following all due policies and procedures to ensure smooth delivery of tasks related to attendance, learner leave and discipline to ensure compliance.

Understanding SETA Quality Assurance Management Division

All providers, regardless of the sector in which they are active, may be accredited by only one Quality Assurance Management Division. Where a provider offers learning programmes across more than one sector, it is a requirement that at least 51% of that provider’s offerings must fall within the scope of Services SETA Quality Assurance Management Division (SETQAA). The provider is responsible for determining and providing evidence of primary focus in its application for accreditation to SETQAA. If the provider has applied to SETQAA for accreditation, but has other programmes that do not fall within the SETQAA scope, the provider must contact the SETQAA department, to have their non-primary focus programme(s) evaluated through a MOU intervention.
